The protective shield covering the Chornobyl reactor core within Ukraine can no longer perform its primary function of blocking radiation, according to the IAEA. This failure follows a drone strike in February that caused significant damage in the structure.
Damage from Aerial Attack Compromises Safety System
An attack by an unmanned aerial vehicle in the second month of the year caused a breach in the multibillion-euro “New Safe Confinement” arch. This enormous protective structure, constructed for €1.5bn and completed in 2019, was intended to seal off radioactive material over the long term. A recent IAEA inspection last week found that the strike had weakened the integrity of the steel confinement.

The New Safe Confinement was erected to enable the future decommissioning of the old sarcophagus, the destroyed reactor hall, and the melted nuclear fuel itself.

Officials in Ukraine had stated that a unmanned aircraft carrying a powerful explosive hit the facility, igniting a blaze and compromising the outer shielding.
