Violent incident at school
Educational institutions in Nigeria's northern region have repeatedly come under attack for weapon-wielding factions

Armed assailants have taken the life of an instructor and kidnapped no fewer than 25 pupils in an attack on a educational institution for young women in north-western Nigeria, authorities have confirmed.

The criminal group stormed the public educational institution for female students in the Maga locality within Kebbi State at approximately 04:00 local time on the beginning of the work week, authorities reported.

The armed individuals "confronted officers on duty in a shootout" before climbing over the boundary wall and seizing the students from their dormitory, an official report indicated.

One member of staff was lost their life while safeguarding the students. A second sustained gunshot wounds and is now being treated medically.

Eyewitnesses described a sizeable number of assailants, identified in the area as outlaw groups, who appeared discharging weapons intermittently to cause panic.

Area inhabitants told reporters that the attackers afterwards forced a group of female students into surrounding rural areas.

The authorities announced they had sent "supplementary tactical squads, in coordination with armed forces and local protection units" to the area.

A systematic finding and recovery effort is underway in surrounding forests and potential getaway paths.

In the last several years, learning centers in northern Nigerian regions have regularly come under attack for armed groups, who routinely perform seizures to demand financial compensation or secure advantages in discussions with officials.

The attack in Kebbi State underscores the continuing safety emergency troubling the locality, causing relatives in Maga in a condition of terrified weariness as they wait and hope for their daughters' safe return.

Safety emergency in northern Nigeria has escalated dramatically in the past few months, with educational institutions experiencing the greatest impact of the unrest.
