Israelis have assembled across the country to mark 24 months since the Hamas-led attack on October 7th, 2023, as negotiations proceeded in Egypt over an end to the conflict in Gaza.

The incident led to in excess of 1,200 people dead and 251 others taken back to Gaza as captives. It was the most most lethal day for the Jewish community since the World War II.

Israel answered by launching a military offensive in Gaza which has taken more than 67,000 people, based on figures from the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. Its numbers are seen as trustworthy by the UN and other global organizations.

"The bloodthirsty opponents have hit us hard, but they have not broken us," the prime minister stated on that day.

He also pledged to "achieve all the objectives of the war: the homecoming of all the captured, the removal of the Hamas government and the promise that Gaza will no longer present a risk to Israel".

Remembrance Gatherings Across Israel

The government authorities rescheduled official memorials until October 16th - after the completion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but ceremonies still occurred throughout the country on Tuesday.

A remembrance service for the families of Israelis who died in the Hamas assault was held in Tel Aviv. Put together by the affected families, it was aired throughout Israeli broadcast stations.

Hours earlier, a minute's silence was respected around the country.

Peace Discussions in Egypt

Simultaneously, the conflicting parties' delegations gathered in the North African tourist destination of the Egyptian city for a follow-up session of mediated discussions to review the conditions of the plan.

A high-ranking delegate involved in the negotiations revealed that an late session of negotiations started at evening in Egypt.

The source stated the earlier meeting finished without tangible results, due to differences over the suggested Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas demands to ensure Israel does not recommence hostilities after the first phase of the deal.

He commented that the discussions are "challenging and have still not produce any significant progress," but mentioned that mediators are making efforts to close the gaps between the both parties.

Essential Points in Discussions

  • A permanent truce
  • The swap of the prisoners still kept by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
  • The pullout of troops from Gaza
  • Plans for humanitarian aid deliveries
  • Post-war governance of the territory

Citizen Feeling

In Tel Aviv's public square previously, young Hagar - whose sibling survived the attack on the gathering, where 378 people were killed and many more were taken hostage by Hamas militants - told: "No location feels like home anymore and until each abducted person come back none of us will be secure."

"After we see everybody home once more, we can breathe anew. Then we can commence recover," she continued.

Outside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people assembled to show their backing for the relatives of the abducted. Israel says 48 remain in confinement in Gaza, twenty of whom are considered to be surviving.

Activist one woman stated: "We must do every compromise necessary for the abducted to return. But we really want assurances that we will be safe."

Research now consistently show that around the majority of Israelis prefer the conflict to end in return for the freedom of the abducted.

Palestinian Circumstances

At the area of Nova festival, those paying respects gathered to honor the dead.

From there, the boom of military attacks and shelling could be heard just a short distance away in Gaza, where local people said the intense Israeli bombardment carried on.

In the urban center, air and artillery strikes were documented in the early hours of that day in the west side Tal al-Hawa, area and Nasr areas and in the east side neighbourhood of Sheikh Radwan, as well Shati refugee camp to the north-west.

"Once the dusk falls, the dread comes with it," evacuated Gaza City resident a local woman, whose 17-year-old son was died by an Israeli bombing previously, shared.

"My family are terrified of the air strikes. All the night we are lying together, embracing, notably my little child who puts his face on me all night."

"Constantly we monitor the reports to see developments. And I'm worried that this truce will not be achieved and that the fighting will come back to us."

Health Crisis

Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City said it had taken in the corpses of several people by the daytime, including a trio killed in an Israeli strike in the southern district.
