Forecasters have indicated a frosty start to the new year, with wintry precipitation expected across much of the UK. Those celebrating have been told to bundle up as near-freezing temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.

Celebratory Events Go Ahead Despite Alerts

The Scottish capital's iconic Hogmanay events are expected to go ahead, following last year's calling-off. This comes despite yellow warnings for snow over northern Scotland.

"A cold New Year's Eve evening for those out celebrating, so additional clothing will be necessary," noted the weather service.

Displays Under Mostly Clear but Frosty Skies

Across the UK, the weather is set to be suited to fireworks displays, with a lack of precipitation and open skies. The mercury are forecast to be chilly, so extra layers vital, said forecasters.

Further north, conditions will be cloudier, but this is not anticipated to hamper visibility for viewing fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.

Extensive Snow Warnings for Friday

Moving into Friday, snow alerts are in place across Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and most of the south-east of England.

• Disruptions and cancellations are anticipated on public transport.

Temperatures Forecast to Drop Further

Going into the new year, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are forecast to drop further as snow and gale-force winds are expected to hit the north of the country.

Around 10cm of snow could accumulate to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.

Public Health Warnings Issued

At the same time, serious cold weather health warnings have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to continue until noon on 5 January, with readings forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Authorities explained this signified the weather was likely to lead to major effects across medical and care provision. This involves a potential rise in the mortality rate among the elderly or unwell or those in the older age groups.
