New York's next mayor affirms his intention to live in the storied Gracie Mansion
New York City's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion, departing from the affordable apartment that became a focal point during his run for office.
An Iconic Home
Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the official residence for most New York City mayors since the mid-20th century.
But, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a core policy, was not quick to announce his residency plans immediately after his electoral win in November.
"My choice rested on our family's safety and the importance of focusing all of my focus on carrying out the affordability agenda the city's residents supported," the Mayor-Elect declared in a statement.
A Fond Farewell
Mamdani lived in the Astoria neighbourhood, an area known for its abundance of cultural enclaves and global cuisine.
"To my neighbors in Astoria: many thanks for demonstrating what is great about New York City," he noted.
"While I may no longer live there, Astoria will always live a part of me and my work," he said.
A Contentious Issue
During his race for mayor, Mamdani tied his central policy – to freeze the rent – to his own housing situation.
Yet his critics, including former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for remaining in the rent-stabilized unit despite the fact that he hails from a well-known family.
A House Not Always Used
Not all mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, chose to live in his own townhouse on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his time in office, which concluded in 2012.
Rather, Bloomberg argued it could serve as a venue for public city functions, and championed an extensive renovation of the historic mansion.
A Stately Residence
Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion near his swearing-in on 1 January, he will experience an environment a stark contrast to his humble Astoria apartment.
Featuring butter yellow paint, emerald shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home overlooking the East River.
Inside, the first floor of the Federal-style mansion is furnished to reflect the home's original era.
The compound, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also has enhanced security to secure the mayor and his family.
Haunted History
Some residents have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.
Chirlane McCray, the partner of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors would sometimes open and shutting on their own, and the floors emitted odd sounds.
The departing mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "I don't care what anyone says," he declared in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."
Affordable Housing Lifeline
The apartment he is leaving is rent stabilised, which means the city regulates on how much building managers can increase rent each year.
New Yorkers view rent-stabilized housing as crucial resources as the price of rent exceeds what many can afford.
It was reported Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.
According to real estate analysts Zillow, the median rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
