The vehicles for the 2026 season are designed to be more compact, agile and eco-conscious compared to current models.

The world of Formula 1 has unveiled the new language that will be used to reference the advanced features of its new 2026 regulations.

The sport is implementing what is potentially the most significant technical shift in its illustrious history starting in 2026, featuring revised car and engine specifications and the mandatory use of 100% sustainable fuels.

The revised engines, which retain the hybrid V6 layout, boast a substantially higher electrical capacity, requiring significant developments in the aero packages.

During grand prix events, competitors will strategically manage electrical energy – potentially on qualifying laps – to extract the best performance.

Extensive fan consultation were conducted with a mix of viewers, including new, casual and core fans, to identify which phrases would aid comprehension of the main elements of the 2026 changes.

The key objective was to make a set of intricate technical aspects of the sport as accessible as possible for the broadest viewership.

Consequently, initial designations for certain devices – such as "x-mode and z-mode" for the adjustable aero – have been discarded in preference for descriptive names that clearly indicate the real-world effect of the technology.

Key Technical Innovations

The FIA states that competitors will have increased agency to determine tactics regarding power usage, harvesting, and saving energy.

The 2026 rules introduce a set of functions that will be clearly indicated on TV overlays to improve the viewers' comprehension of the on-track action.

  • Overtake Mode: This takes over from the present overtaking aid. It provides a short boost of battery power available when a car is close behind the vehicle in front to assist with an pass.
  • Power Mode: This is a driver-operated energy deployment from the hybrid system that can be used in attack or defence. It provides the pilot peak output at the click of a switch.

Both of these key functions will have to be used with calculation, as the available electrical charge is restricted.

  • Active Aero: Both the nose and rear wings adjust their angles – opening on the high-speed sections for minimal air resistance and higher speed, and sealing in the bends for optimal cornering performance.
  • Energy Harvesting: The system can replenish their battery with energy harvested under braking, or during partial power application at the end of straights or in certain corners where only reduced throttle is used.

What's Changing on the Cars?

The 2026 cars will be more compact and lighter than this year, with a distance between axles reduced by 200mm to 3,400mm, overall width reduced by 100mm – down to 1,900mm – and the car weight decreased by 30kg.

Overall downforce is anticipated to be reduced by approximately 15-30%, although teams will naturally regain performance as they refine their designs.

Drag has been slashed by 40%. The vehicles will employ active aerodynamics – both wings will open on the straight sections to improve speed and enhance velocity and return into place for optimal grip in corners.

Wheels will keep 18-inch rims, but the actual tyres will be narrower, by 25 millimetres on the front axle and 30mm at the rear.

Power Unit Revolution

The 2026 engines will have an near-equal balance in energy output by the ICE and the battery and motor, up from about 20% battery contribution under present rules.

The ERS setup is streamlined through the elimination of the complex turbo energy recovery device, the intricate and expensive unit that generated electricity from the exhaust turbo.

All vehicles will be obliged to compete on carbon-neutral fuel, manufactured from organic sources or synthetic industrial processes.
