The Derry Prequel Series Releases Next Ahead of Schedule on HBO's Digital Service

Audiences are thrilled for the Stephen King adaptation It: Welcome to Derry, that's been receiving positive feedback and drawing from themes from other Stephen King works. Now, the broadcaster announced that episode two will premiere ahead of schedule, released fittingly for October 31st.

Early Release Details

Starting on October 31 at midnight PT, the next part of the Derry prequel will launch on the streaming service, prior to its Sunday HBO premiere. Subsequent episodes of the eight-episode season will continue to air on Sunday nights on the network and streaming service, leading up to the season finale on the 14th of December.

Storyline Summary

Based in the Derry mythology, the new series is inspired by the original story while expanding on the universe brought to life by filmmaker Andy Muschietti in It and It Chapter Two. It Chapter One highlighted young characters facing unimaginable horrors, thus it's suitable that the series continues that tradition. Nevertheless, the debut of the streaming show demonstrates it aimed to increase the tension, delivering heightened horror than the cinematic versions and establishing a dark atmosphere for the rest of the season.

Setting and Themes

Located in the early '60s, this show presents a fresh cast of grown-ups and kids residing in a apparently peaceful community hiding a sinister core. Derry functions through a cruel, recurring cycle—characterized by violence, bigotry, and the supernatural, as a evil entity returns every 27 years. Although Welcome to Derry might seem like it skews too close to the movies initially, what differentiates the streaming show is its two-sided viewpoint—narrated via the viewpoints of young and old concurrently. Children are particularly vulnerable to It's terror, but older characters don't escape facing their own nightmares arising from local discrimination and lurking supernatural forces.

Episode 2 premieres on Halloween at midnight PT.
