The Details Known About the Victims of the Bondi Terrorist Incident

No fewer than 16 people lost their lives and over 40 were hurt when attackers fired on a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, an incident local authorities have labeled a act of terrorism.

As of the newest reports, authorities have confirmed the death toll is 16, including one of the alleged attackers. Furthermore, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to medical facilities.

The victims are still awaiting formally identified, but authorities state their ages are between 10 and 87 years old.

Here are the individuals who have been named so far.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Described as a father-of-five, he was the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She recounted the moments before the attack, explaining they had been standing together when the shooting erupted. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister said that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the statement read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was also killed during the attack, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number remain under care, with five in serious condition. The injured include two officers who attended the scene.

A casualty is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Called a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
