The retail giant Implements Purchase Limits on Pokémon Trading Cards
As a notable development, Walmart has begun implementing purchase restrictions on how many Pokémon trading card products customers can acquire during one shopping trip. This policy was activated as of early November, based on an internal announcement distributed to employees.
Tackling Reseller Problems
While not officially confirmed by Walmart, numerous sources suggest this decision was prompted by a widely shared social media clip that showed a customer buying an enormous quantity of Pokémon card items at a checkout counter. The employee seen in the video received widespread backlash for allowing the large-scale transaction to go through.
Rule Specifics and Possible Weaknesses
The new restriction specifies that shoppers may only buy up to five trading card packs or boxes per store visit. Yet, the language has raised questions due to its vagueness. What exactly counts as a "box" is not defined, and whether someone could still purchase five high-value Elite Trainer Boxes is uncertain.
Moreover, because the restriction is tied to each visit, theoretically a determined scalper could return repeatedly—buying five items each time—to gather large quantities throughout the day.
The Reseller Crisis
To most players, such efforts might seem over the top, yet for resellers, it's common behavior. Over the past few seasons, speculators have significantly added to frequent stockouts of Pokémon cards, driven by the game's rising popularity.
Certain buyers aim to sell unopened products for a profit, whereas some search for valuable pulls that can command sky-high values. For instance, a specific Mega Evolution card in recent releases is currently selling at prices exceeding eight hundred dollars on various platforms.
Upcoming Releases
This policy change aligns with the approaching launch of the Phantasmal Flames set, scheduled for November 14th. Early listings already show chase cards like the Charizard mega evolution listed for around fifteen hundred dollars, emphasizing the ongoing demand and likely reseller attention.
Hopefully, the retail limits will help reduce mass buying and improve availability for genuine collectors and casual players alike.
