The Showrunner Shares He Has an Idea of How His Sci-Fi Series Will End... At the Moment.
Vince Gilligan never anticipated that the Apple TV+ show would become a breakout success. “I am so grateful to the audience,” Gilligan says. “I was surprised by the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
Now that Season 1 of the acclaimed program wrapping up—and a second season greenlit and underway—the writers' room opened up about the fan response and whether it will shape the storyline of Pluribus.
About the Overwhelming Audience Reaction
Anyone might to get sidetracked by the constant speculation and fan theories about Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is doing his best to avoid both.
“It's like being an endless supply of your favorite dessert and being in a state of bliss,” he says. “It's amazing, but I hear about it from others, and that's by design. Not once have I searched for my own name online, nor do I ever intend to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a rabbit hole I know I would disappear down and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from the hardware store and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
In spite of Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s it's impossible to ignore the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to take it in stride and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“We make no attempt to adjust our writing,” says Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not changed by what people are saying.”
“Better to keep our focus on the work,” he chimes in.
A Pressing Query: Will the creator Know the Ending of Pluribus?
Considering Gilligan and his team are not listening by fan response, does that mean they already know how Pluribus will finally conclude? Essentially yes… in a way.
“We've developed some compelling concepts about where the show might end up,” Gilligan reveals. “however, we remain prepared to abandon a solid concept for a superior concept. That philosophy has guided us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we get a better idea and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
Then again, if plans fall through, executive producer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to use as a backup.
“I keep pitching that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and the characters are inside it,” Smith jokes, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Then again, why not reference the classics?
“My dream is Carol to wake up in bed beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
Pluribus is currently available on the streaming service.
