A comprehensive search and rescue operation is presently ongoing in the Caribbean waters for a duo of unlocated sailboats transporting relief goods traveling from the Mexican coast to the island of Cuba.

Maritime Rescue Efforts Initiated

The Mexican government has sent navy personnel and reconnaissance aircraft to locate the two vessels, which were transporting at least nine sailors, according to a military release.

The vessels had been projected to make landfall in Cuba's capital on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been radio silence from them and zero verification of their docking, the navy said.

Context of Aid to the Nation

Cuba has relied heavily on aid convoys from Mexico over recent weeks, as the island grapples with multiple national electricity failures.

"The captains and crews are veteran seafarers, and each boat are equipped with proper safety equipment and communication devices," an official associated with the mission said.

The nine individuals on board are from the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Mexican authorities said it has established contact with rescue coordination centers from the involved countries along with their embassy officials.

"Our team is collaborating completely with the relevant authorities and continue to be hopeful in the crews' ability to reach Havana safely," the statement continued.

Recent Aid Shipment

Earlier in the week, the Cuban authorities publicly celebrated and officially received a different ship that had transported 14 tonnes of donated goods to the nation.

That ship, called "a modern Granma" after the yacht in which the revolutionary leader landed in Cuba to launch the armed struggle in the mid-20th century, carried solar equipment, medicines, baby formula, bikes and food.

Larger International Backdrop

Charity groups and individuals have largely spearheaded efforts to deliver humanitarian aid to Cuba beginning in January, a period which saw a fuel embargo on the country was initiated.

Global bodies have since warned of ""severe" supply shortages, with in excess of 50,000 operations called off in Cuba amid energy rationing.

Foreign policy pressure have intensified lately, with statements from several leaders underscoring the complicated situation regarding relations.

Responding to recent proposals, a senior Cuban official declared that "the socialist system of Cuba is not up for negotiation."

Accounts suggest that early stages of talks had begun, although their current progress remains not publicly known.

The maritime authorities stated it was pledged to using the full extent of its capabilities at its command to find the sailboats and guarantee the security of the crews.

At this time, there has been silence on the disappeared vessels by the government in Havana.
