UN:Me: A Cerebral Thriller Merging Silent Hill and Social Deduction Mechanics
The latest Day of the Devs online presentation revealed a number of intriguing upcoming titles, but one especially has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience seems to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.
"This is a unique game where a young woman harboring multiple personalities inside her needs to flee from a maze of the psyche," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Fractured Mind
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of high school age. Inside her exist four separate personas, each with unique fears and motivations. These entities can take over at will, releasing their deep-seated terrors upon her suddenly.
Judging by revealed footage, much of the narrative takes place within a eerie hospital, while additional clips show the main character exploring a abandoned church.
A World of Individual Dread
"What are you afraid of? What causes you uncomfortable?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Things that appear minor to other people can activate a deep instinct within us. This game explores that idea — anxieties that are unique to each person."
The central mechanic revolves around controlling whichever soul emerges at a particular moment. However, these identities will switch involuntarily as you play. During exploration, every persona's anxieties become exaggerated and assault the girl in succession. When the soul shifts, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
Eerie Visuals and a Deadly Choice
At first glance, UN:Me displays noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is populated by orderlies who all share the same face, with disturbingly broad smiles. Figures in the waiting room have large flowers growing from their necks should be. Floral motifs are a recurring theme, juxtaposing natural beauty with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls inhabiting the protagonist is the "true" one. "All four souls claims that the body belongs to them," notes a developer. "During the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."
Once players have deduced a soul is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. But, since each soul can lie or hide the truth, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Maybe you've already eliminated the real [soul] by your own actions," a voice suggests. "The final entity standing could be a fraud. In any case, your choices are final."
UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced release date, but it is can be follow on platforms.
