While Sunbathers Fled Danger, Viral Picture Captures Lifeguard Dashing ‘Full Speed’ To the Site.

Alexandra Ching, a permanent resident of Bondi, views the iconic coast as her own backyard. On that particular weekend night, she, along with numerous neighbors, heard cracking sounds echoing around the community.

“We all thought the same, but I considered it was still too bright and you couldn't spot any lights,” she explains. Stepping out of her apartment, she witnessed people “flooding up Bondi Road”. The faces she saw made it clear a crisis was unfolding.

While standing on the avenue, speaking to a couple who had run up the incline in their swimwear, she noticed someone coming up from behind. This turned out to be a beach patrol officer, dashing to Bondi barefoot from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – a distance of 1.5km – while holding a life-saving kit.

“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I only caught a glimpse of this flash of blue,” she recalls. “He was just flying past. He was the only one heading in the opposite way that everyone was trying to escape from, carrying that big kit and without footwear … He’s running at something that undoubtedly every instinct would tell you to go in the other direction.

“Absolutely no pause, but just totally pedal to the metal sprinting.”

A Symbol of Heroism In the Wake of Chaos

The image Ching captured of the lifeguard, later named as Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as one of many moments of valour in the aftermath of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, a fellow beach safety officer, noted that Doolan, called “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to support the remaining crew at Bondi, as well as to help emergency personnel, law enforcement and paramedics attending to many victims.

Community Reaction and Assistance

Doolan’s actions was just one of many to come out of the local area, with the beach facility next to the scene of the attack becoming a temporary treatment center. Reports indicate that other team members were also seen taking action, including rushing into the ocean to assist people in distress.

Following the tragedy, messages of appreciation flooded in. One post expressed thanks for the responders who showed that “kindness will always overcome evil”.

The team of beach patrol later shared a message, explaining they were “processing what happened”.

“Thank you all for your supportive sentiments and support. We are touched by the care for our responders,” the group stated. “In time, we will recount our experiences in the belief that it aids those involved.”

Council Praise

Waverley council, the governing body that hires many full-time beach safety officers, said that the team rose to the occasion from the moment the incident started until late that nighttime.

“People have shared so many powerful narratives, but the viral image of Jackson Doolan, racing from Tamarama to Bondi with a medical device so he could help preserve life is incredible,” stated a council representative.

“Our lifeguards exhibit altruism every day in keeping our world-famous beaches secure for the public, but what we saw on that day should be commended.

“While we mourn and process the horror of this brutal and barbaric act of violence, I think it is crucial that we focus on just how much light we have witnessed in the midst of such hatred.”
